Designer Melissa Borrell’s innovative "Pop-Out Pendant" has just been picked up by the New York MoMA Design Store. This unique concept is the latest "wearable invention of Borrell, who specializes in designs that emphasize the “interaction between an individual and a product.” Her creations have taken the form of jewelry, wall coverings, sculpture, textile design, lighting and home accessories. Growing with popularity, this signature pendant is currently being sold in many other boutiques across the country. Made of stainless steel, the pendant (available in a red or black powder-coated version as well as steel) retail at the MoMA stores for $40.00.

Borrell's designs cross the lines between sculpture, graphics, fashion and architecture. She created the shape from a photo that she took of tree branches. "I chose that image because I was really interested in the patterns that they (the branches) made. It was a nature inspired shape," said Borrell. The "tree lace" shape was first designed as a large neckpiece that was cut out of rubber and fit over the head. Borrell then launched her "Pop-Out Pendant" at the Designboom Mart at the ICFF in May 2006. "My work pushes the boundaries between art and design and I like the fact that the steel pendant gives the illusion that it's a tattoo, blurring the distinction between an object and a drawing." Borrell has since also introduced "Pop Out Earrings" and plans to expand the line into more colors and shapes.

Self-taught as a jewelry designer, Borrell opened her first jewelry studio in San Francisco in 1999. In 2005 she received an MFA from Rhode Island School of Design and established her company Melissa Borrell Design in Houston to focus on the design and development of products for interiors. A native Houstonian, Melissa has lived on both the East and West coasts. After earning a BA in French Literature and Studio Art at Tufts University and The School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston she moved to San Francisco.

Recognizing the freshness of her ideas, Borrell was featured on HGTV's "That's Clever" demonstrating how to make her "Grid Earrings" and "Topography Necklace." Her designs have also been featured in international design magazines POLOxygen (Australia), and CasaD (Italy). Borrell exhibited a new line of textile designs at PrintSource in January of 2007. Her debut collection of home accessories will be shown at the ICFF in May 2007 (booth #823).
Borrell always asks: "Where do art and design intersect? How does visual art meet functional art? How does scale influence the perception of an art piece?" Her designs and artwork challenge a viewer's notions of space, art, and functionality and facilitate a new understanding of these concepts. "I create designs that individuals can interact with and that will affect their perception of the space that they inhabit," she says. "My work addresses the complexities that lie in the in-between spaces: the tension between structure and fluidity, systems and chaos, movement and transformation, perception and reality."
