Under the patronage of the Consul General of France, Mr. François Delattre, Joëlle Deroy is pleased to present “Calligraphic Paintings” an exhibition of her new works on paper and canvas.

Large-scale down to the smallest-scale, the works at first glance express a vital tension.
Upon closer examination, the balance between freehand strokes and internal structure, powerful colors and earthy tones, texture boldness and lines refinement give to the work an inner quality of peaceful energy.

The dense works on canvas can be sourced to Chinese and Japanese calligraphy –the concepts behind the characters, their esthetic and the Zen approach to creation. Contrarily to traditional calligraphy though, each painting is built as a succession of paintings, one level leading to the next one until the artist finds the meaningful simplicity and beauty she is looking for. As Constantin Brancusi said, “in art, one does not aim for simplicity; one achieves it unintentionally as one gets closer to the real meaning of things”. Watercolors on paper and Japanese boards, on the other hand, are influenced by Japanese ink works and express the same research of emotionally meaningful lines, of a visual rhythm which echoes the flow of life.

Deroy's work typifies the cultural interactions of our age, the research for an art in continuity with the teaching of occidental and oriental masters yet speaking the language of the present time. Born in Texas from French parents, raised subsequently in countries as diverse as France, Libya, Indonesia, Italy and the Unites States of America, Deroy embraces this universal heritage and invites the viewer to participate in a visual and intimate awakening.

The artist lives and works in New York City. In 2004, Deroy's paintings were exhibited at International Art Expo in New York City and at the Museum of the Americas in Miami, Florida.
