Bodell and Fahey open
their new art and project space Umbrella Arts
in collaboration with Professional Women Photographers
(PWP). Renowned photographer Elinor Carucci
will select the works for Passion, a juried exhibition
selected from the work of over 200 PWP members.
Photographers are inspired by the following theme
of Passion: Passion is fuel for life.
We are born with passion to create with passion. We love,
work, and play with passion; many pray with passion —
and for it. Our need to touch is passionate: it binds
us together as couples and families, communities and nations.
Yet all history knows that passion, a strange and lovely
fire, has volatile personality. The yin and yang of love
and hate, the passion of politics can result in extraordinary
achievement, as well as unspeakable destruction; passions
of the heart inspire great and often tragic art.
PWP has expanded the art world, promoting
photography by women for more than 30 years. Founded in
1975, PWP is a not-for-profit organization based in NYC.
Its mission is to support and promote the work of women
photographers through the sharing of ideas, resources
and experience. PWP provides educational forums to encourage
artistic development, and through monthly meetings and
community outreach, stimulates interest in and support
of the art of photography.
Elinor Carucci, celebrated photographer
and professional belly dancer, is a recipient of the Guggenheim
Fellowship and the International Center of Photography
Infinity Award. She photographs regularly for New York
Magazine, W Magazine, and the New York Times Magazine.
Carucci is represented in New York City by the Edwynn
Houk Gallery.
Umbrella Arts is pleased to present Passion
for its inaugural exhibition. Bodell and Fahey are recognized
art world innovators, whose passion it has been to discover
and nurture emerging talent. For over 15 years in the
East Village, Fahey and Bodell have supported community-based
art efforts from gallery exhibitions to producing large-scale
events.
