The

and pianist Pandelis Karayorgis. The Pandelis Karayorgis Quintet
will perform at the Tonic on Friday, April 5, at 8 p.m.; the Tonic
is located at 107 Norfolk Street (tel.: 212-358-7501).
The group featuring Mat Maneri (viola), Tony Malaby (tenor sax),
Pandelis Karayorgis (piano), Michael Formanek (bass) and Randy
Peterson (drums) will present original music written by Pandelis
Karayorgis for the groups new CD Disambiguation.
In the liner notes Kevin Whitehead writes: "This is what
jazz should be like at the dawn of its second century: deft and
complex without making a big fuss over either quality."
Pandelis Karayorgis studied economics at the University of Piraeus
in Greece and in 1985 moved to Boston to pursue studies in music.
Mr. Karayorgis holds BM and MM degrees with honors
from the New England Conservatory of Music where he studied with
Joe Maneri, Paul Bley, Dave Holland and others. He also directed
the Thelonious Monk Repertory Ensemble at the New England Conservatory.
Pandelis Karayorgis has performed internationally at festivals
and clubs in Europe, Canada and the United States. His recordings
appear on such labels as Leo Records, Hat Art, Cadence, Boxholder,
Accurate, Leo Lab and HatOLOGY. He has collaborated and recorded
with Joe and Mat Maneri, Ken Vandermark and Guillermo Gregorio
among others. He has also led or co-led his own groups whose CDs
have often been voted into reviewers top-10 lists in magazines
such as Coda, Cadence, Jazz Times and Jazziz. His recent CD Heart
and Sack was featured on National Public Radios Fresh
Air.
In Greece, Mr. Karayorgis has performed or collaborated with several
groups and musicians, including Mode Plagal and Floros Floridis,
and has performed at the Megaron Mousikis Concert Hall
